 Advent:

Advent is not widely celebrated in England. Although in the church calender Advent is the official start of the run up to Christmas.
Two traditions that have caught on in England are the Advent calender and the Advent candle.

Christmas Eve, december 24th:

On Christmas Eve carol singing, midnight church services and going out to the pub are some of the activities that many families enjoy.

13 percent of families always attend church on Christmas Day.
The strain of cooking the big Christmas dinner sees the average Britains start to sip their first alcohol at
11:48 am.
27 percent sit down and watch the Queens speech.
Dinner is finally served at 3:24pm, with 85 percent of people enjoying the traditional turkey with all the trimmings.
38 percent think that spending time with the familiy is the best thing about Christmas.

Boxing Day, december 26th:

In England Boxing Day is celebrated on december 26th, is traditionally a time to give gifts to tradesmen, servants and friends.
It's a public holiday but some shops and supermarkets are open nowadays.

Working-Life balance

In our last English lesson we were talking about a healthy work-life-balance. So I’d like to tell you about my lifestyle and how I deal with stress.

These things are very important for me to avoid stress:

At first a relaxing holiday in autumn is very important for me because it gives me new strentgh.

The second thing is doing sports because it keeps me fit.

At least breaks are very necessary when studying for a test for me because if I am exhausted, studying is much harder.

But also music is very important because than I forget all my problems and avoid stress.

My shopping experience

Hello,

today I'd like to tell you about the last time I was on a shopping trip.
The last time I was in a shopping centre was last weekend in the 'Plus City'.

At 13 o'clock I arrived the Plus City with the bus with my best friend.

The shopping centre is not very big but there are shops in it what I really like.

On the weekend I bought sunglasses, a jean, a T-shirt and shoes. The sunglasses and the T-shirt I bought at H & M, the jean and the shoes I bought at New Yorker.

I basically liked to buy more clothes but I hadn't enough money to spend. For example a really nice sweater and a very expensive blouse.

Of course I had lunch at the Plus City too. For lunch I went to 'Burgerista'.

At 20 o'clock I went home by bus, so I was seven hours there.

My favourite sport

Hello,
let me tell you about my favourite sport, tennis. I have been practising this sport for many years and I would like to give you some facts about this wonderful sport.

The sport tennis has been played for hundreds of years, but the game as it is known today is little more than a century old.

Tennis can be played as an individual contest between two players (singles), or a team game between two pairs of players (doubles).

The three basic actions are the swinging action, the  throwing action and the punching.
Than there are three main types of strokes, which are the groundstroke, the serve and the volley.

To decide, who will start with the serve, you toss a coin. Whoever wins the toss can decide either to serve or to reseive.
The server must always begin from the right court and must stand behind the baseline within the imaginary extension of his centermark and sideline. The server must put the ball in the air by hand and then strike it with the racket before it hits the ground. The ball must cross the net before it bounce.

Austrian food

Dear Ivonne,

thanks for your E-Mail, let me give you some information about Food and table manners in Austria.

Let me tell you first about..
the Austrian food:

"Sachertorte"
In Austria the typical food is for example a "Wiener Schnitzel".
It is a meat which is breaded and you eat chips with it. Another typical meal is the pork roast with dumplings. It is really often eaten by Austrian people. Then there is the typical dessert which is called "Sachertorte", it's a chocolate cake. When you eat the cake you often drink a coffee with it.

Secondly to the table manners:

The typical table manners are:

  • Remain standing until you are invited to sit down. You may be shown to a particular seat.
  • Table manners are continental - the fork is held in the left hand and the knife in the right while eating.
  • You have to put your napkin on your lap as soon as you sit down.
  • Do not begin eating until the host or hostess says "Mahlzeit" or "Guten Appetit".
  •  You should cut as much of your food with your fork as possible, because this compliments the cook by saying the food is very tender.
  •  Of course you should finish everything on your plate.
  •  Indicate you have finished eating by laying your knife and fork parallel on your plate
  • The host or hostess makes the first toast. Everyone lifts and clinks glasses, looks at the person making the toast and says, "Prost".

Wednesday

My Room

My room is not so large but I really like it. Opposite to the door there is a big window with red hangings. In front of the window there is my bed. My bed is big and comfortable. Opposite my bed, next to the door there is the wardrobe which is not very big but big enough for my clothes. In my room there is also a big mirror which I love.
